Pearl Harbor 84th Anniversary, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, SJR80 Signed Into Law, Removing Somalis From Minneapolis, FLOTUS Visits Children's Hospital, NG Can Stay In DC For Now, Patriot Elizabeth Virginia (Bess) Truman

By S.E. Gunn, PhD -All News Pipeline

On December 5, 2025, President Trump signed the ProclamationNational Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2025reminding us that 84 years ago, on December 7, 1941, the US Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii was bombed in an unprovoked attack by the Japanese military. They claimed the lives of 2,403 Americans, both service members and civilians stationed at Pearl Harbor, Kaneohe, Ford Island, Barbers Point, and Hickam Field. This action precipitated the US's entry into WWII. Instead of crippling our military and holding our citizens in hostage with this attack, this event crystalized the American spirit. From this tragedy sprang courage and determination to defeat the enemy that has been inbred into our people since the American Revolution.

In the 84 years after we entered WWII and obliterated the enemy, our enemy has forsaken the ways of world conquest by war. Japan is now, once again, a partner with whom we work everyday to defend our common interests. But we will never forget how a trusted friend can become an enemy. This image below is what remains to remind us that while we trust countries in which we have partnerships, we must still be vigilant. We stand ready in peace or war to defend our homeland against all enemies foreign or domestic.

Public Law 103-308, 108 STAT 1669, HJR131, 36 USC 169, was signed into law on August 23, 1994 declaring December 7, 1941 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and calls upon the President to issue an annual proclamation for the People of the US to observe with appropriate ceremonies and activities. In addition, all Federal agencies, and anyone else who desires, to fly our flag at half-mast every December 7 in honor of those who died as a result of this surprise attack. To fulfill this obligation, President Trump has proclaimed:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2025, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. I encourage all Americans to observe this solemn day and to honor our military, past and present, with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I urge all Federal agencies and interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff in honor of those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

On December 5, 2025, the White House published the Presidential Message onNational Impaired Driving Prevention Month reminding us that every year thousands of people die due to accidents caused by impaired drivers. CDC says in 2020 a total of 11,654 people were killed by alcohol-impaired drivers calling it a 14.3% increase since 2019. The CDC also cites a NHTSA [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] study from 7 trauma centers covering September 2019 to July 2021 finding that of the 4,243 impaired drivers treated:

22% were positive for alcohol, 25% were positive for marijuana, 9% were positive for opioids, 10% were positive for stimulants, and 8% were positive for sedatives.

By 2023, NHTSA found 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired traffic deaths (about 34 people every day). Statistics for impaired driving are not currently available beyond 2023.

As President Trump works to remove illegal drugs from our Nation, his administration is working through various programs (such as the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program created by Congress in 1988 and the Drug-Free Communities Support Programcreated in 1977) to help addicted citizens get the assistance they need to triumph over drug and/or alcohol addiction. He reminds us:

This month, we remember all those whose lives were stolen by impaired drivers. We extend our gratitude to the heroic police officers, first responders, healthcare workers, and local organizations who are working on the front lines to prevent these catastrophes. Above all, we recommit to preventing these senseless tragediesand we renew our resolve to never waver in putting the safety, health, and well-being of the American people first.

On December 5, 2025, President Trump signed SJR80 into law.

SJR80 -A joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, [802] United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Bureau of Land Management relating to "National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska Integrated Activity Plan Record of Decision"was introduced on September 18, 2025 by Dan Sullivan (R-AK). This bill is one paragraph:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That Congress disapproves the rule submitted by the Bureau of Land Management relating to National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska Integrated Activity Plan Record of Decision (issued April 25, 2022, as a record of decision, and a letter of opinion from the Government Accountability Office dated July 24, 2025, printed in the Congressional Record on July 28, 2025, on pages S4768S4770, concluding that such record of decision is a rule under the Congressional Review Act), and such rule shall have no force or effect.

On December 5, 2025, the White House published the articleThis Is Who Democrats Like Tim Walz Are Defendingin Minneapolis. In addition to the massive $1,000,000,000 fraud scandal(discussed in my December 2, 2025 ANP Article) by a group of Somali "immigrants," the Trump Administration finds that the Somali population in the state are vulnerable to radicalization by terror organizations.

In response, President Trump has stated his intent topause migration from 3rd world countries as of November 27, 2025 (discussed in my November 28, 2025 ANP Article). In addition, public safety threats are being swept off the streets of Minneapolis by ICE and other agencies. Here are some of the recently arrested people Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey support wholeheartedly:

  • Ahmed Mohamed Said, a criminal illegal from Somalia. He has convictions for domestic violence (x2), DUI (x3), trespassing (x3), assault on a peace officer, assault, disorderly conduct, obstructing transit, theft of services, damaging property, probation violations, and more.
  • Abdulkadir Sharif Abdi, a criminal illegal from Somalia. He is a member of the Almighty Vice Lord Nation gang and a former member of the Gangster Disciples. He has convictions for fraud, receiving stolen property, receiving a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and multiple probation violations
  • Sahal Osman Shidane, a criminal illegal from Somalia. He is a sex predator with a conviction for criminal sexual conduct with a minor aged 13-15.
  • Mukhtar Mohamed Ali, a criminal illegal from Somalia. He has convictions for domestic assault, fraud, robbery, and larceny.
  • Feisal Mohamed-Omar, a criminal illegal from Somalia. He is charged with two counts of domestic violence.

Domestic violence, DUI, trespassing, assault, theft, fraud, vehicle theft, sexual abuse of minors, rape, robbery, and other violent crimes . . . do they accurately represent the recent influx of "migrants" let in unvetted by the autopen administration? I think they do when you remember that many of the people (mostly military-aged men) from 3rd world countries let into our Nation unvetted by the autopen administration came from the jails and mental institutions in those countries.

On December 5, 2025, the Office of the First Lady published the statementFirst Lady Melania Trump Visits Childrens National Hospital in Washington, D.C.The First Lady is following a tradition that started with Bess Truman (First Lady from 1945-1953) by visiting the Children's National Hospital, meeting children and reading to a small group of young patients and their families.

Following the visit, the First Lady stated:

Visiting Childrens National during the Christmas season is a tradition I cherish, and I am grateful for the opportunity to return again this year. Spending time with these brave children and their families is a reminder of the strength, hope, and love that define the holiday spirit. I want to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at Childrens National for the exceptional care they provide during the holiday season and every day.

On December 5, 2025, it snowed for the first time this winter at the White House:

In the lawsuit, D.C. v. Trump docket # 25-5418 Appeal of 1:25-cv-03005 filed in Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit on November 25, 2025 (discussed in my August 18, 2025 and November 21, 2025 ANP Articles) about the NG deployment in DC. On December 4, 2025, Judges Millet, Katsas, and Rao ORDERED:

. . . that the district courts November 20, 2025 order be administratively stayed pending further order of this court. The purpose of this administrative stay is to give the court sufficient opportunity to consider the motion for stay pending appeal and should not be construed in any way as a ruling on the merits of that motion. See D.C. Circuit Handbook of Practice and Internal Procedures 33 (2025).

So that means the NG stays in DC . . . for now . . .

Today's Patriot is Elizabeth Virginia (Bess) (Truman) Wallace who was born February 13, 1885 in Independence, Missouri. She was one of 5 children (3 of whom survived to adulthood). When Bess was 18, her father committed suicide.

Bess graduated from Independence High School attending Miss Barstow's Finishing School for Girls in Kansas City, Missouri. Bess was physically active (playing on the women's basketball team). She studied literature and French. She had a 'thing' for hats as a way to express herself through fashion. When she returned from school, she became the head of her family, joined the bridge club, and joined the Needlework Guild (now known as the National Giving Alliance) where she became involved in charity work.

Bess knew Harry S Truman (1884-1972) all her life as they were neighbors. They attended school together through high school graduation. They were friendly but not close friends, having little contact after graduation . . . until 1910. Harry, looking for an excuse to reconnect with Bess, returned a cake plate to the Wallace's' residence. Bess' mother disapproved of the budding relationship. Harry first proposed by letter in 1911, but Bess said "no." However, by November 1913 they were 'informally' engaged. Harry refused to marry her before WWI because he did not want to risk making her a widow while he was in combat. During WWI, Bess sold war bonds and served on an entertainment committee to provide entertainment for soldiers.

Once Harry returned, the couple married on June 28, 1919 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence, Missouri. After 2 miscarriages, Bess gave birth to Margaret in 1924.

Bess started working to help support the family. She was an account manager at Truman-Jacobsen Haberdashery from 1919 to 1922 when the company went bankrupt. She worked as Harry's aide from 1922 to 1924 and 1926 to 1934 when Harry was elected country judge. During this time, Bess saw the corruption and feared someone might try to kidnap their daughter.

In 1934, Bess stayed in Missouri with her mother when Harry was elected as a Senator from Missouri. After a year apart, Bess and Margaret joined Harry in DC where they lived in rented apartments during sessions, returning to Independence, Missouri the rest of the year. Bess joined the Congressional Club, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the H Street United Service Organization, and the Red Cross (all work of the group informally known as the "Senate Wives"). She again clerked for her husband, answering his personal mail, editing committee reports, and helping to write his speeches. She did find the other Senator's wives boring.

Bess served as SLOTUS for 82 days after Harry was sworn in as VP. President Roosevelt died in April 12, 1945 while in office and Harry, as his VP, ascended to the presidency (although the 25th Amendment on Presidential Succession was not ratified until February 10, 1967) elevating Bess to FLOTUS.

Bess' first act as FLOTUS was to give condolences to Eleanor Roosevelt. Her second act was moving into Blair House (discussed in my December 5, 2025 ANP Article) giving Eleanor time to vacate. On May 7, 1945, Bess & Harry moved into the White House.

During WWII, Bess had limited social responsibilities as the Nation was still at war while mourning the death of President Roosevelt. After WWII, Bess began to restore the White House's "social season" organizing receptions and events. She chose to emulate FLOTUS Elizabeth Kortright Monroe (1768-1830), choosing to host more limited social engagements (luncheons instead of large dinners). She was courteous and respectful of all guests including those she personally disliked. She replied to about 100 personal letters every day. She also began the tradition of visiting the National Children's Hospital each Christmas season in 1945 (see film clip above).

Bess recalls the most embarrassing moment of her life (video below) when she was asked to christen an ambulance plane. She struck and the bottle did not break. Nor did it break for the man who decided after her multiple strikes to "show her how it's done." The bottle finally did break (she was holding it when it broke). Many years later, she finally started to laugh about it.

When Bess was absent from her role of FLOTUS (usually to tend to her ailing mother who died in 1952), she allowed her daughter, Margaret, to fill in for her.

The Trumans left the White House in 1953, returning to Independence, Missouri. The couple traveled, where Bess was surprised at the amount of goodwill the Nation's people had for the couple.

In 1959, Bess underwent a mastectomy for a large, benign, tumor. When President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law in 1965, Bess & Harry were the first to receive Medicare cards, personally presented to them at the Truman Library by President Johnson.

When her husband died in December 1972, at age 88, she was 87. At that time, they were the oldest couple to have occupied the White House.

Bess continued to live quietly in Independence, Missouri. However, I'm not sure exactly how "quiet" her life really was since she received over 100 visitors a week on average. Even though she was over 85, her memory remained sharp. She remembered names and details of those who she had met in the past. She also suffered from arthritis, using a wheel chair in her final years.

Bess died from congestive heart failure on October 18, 1982 at age 97. She was interred beside her husband in the courtyard of the Harry S Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. She remains the longest-lived FLOTUS to date (Rosalyn Carter was 96, Nancy Reagan and Lady Bird Johnson were each 94, Betty Ford was 93, and Barbara Bush was 92 at death). She is also the longest-lived SLOTUS (even though she served only 82 days as SLOTUS before becoming FLOTUS).
