Fed Workers Miss 1st Paycheck During Democrat Forced Shutdown, Columbus Day, Leif Erikson Day, USCG Arctic Icebreaker Vessels, US Constitution Article IV, And More

By S.E. Gunn, PhD -All News Pipeline

Today is Day 10 of the Federal Government Shutdown forced upon the country by Democrat Senators who agreed with CR back in Marchwhich became Public Law 119-4 on March 15, 2025. Now, all of a sudden, the Democrats want $1,500,000,000,000 in funding for a variety of things with the majority of the funding to be earmarked to provide illegal aliens with free healthcare. The Senate vote on the same CR they passed in March 2025 did not pass, again, by a vote of 54 yeas to 45 nays. A total of 60 yea votes are required to pass the CR.

Instead of staying in DC to work through this impasse, the Senate has chosen to shutdown until Tuesday after 3pm ET when they will vote again for the CR. EVERY American should be totally fed up with the Democratic Senators who are refusing to pass the CR forcing Federal employees to work with "delayed payment" until such time as a CR can be passed. In addition, there will be NO working towards an actual funding bill for government for the next 5 days. So, not only are Democrats forcing people to work without pay, they are also refusing to stay on Capital Hill to work towards an actual funding bill. And it does not look like there will be any progress made to fund the government on a CR basis OR on a true funding bill basis. So where will the Democrats be for the next 5 days and what will they be doing instead of staying on Capital Hill and doing their jobs to re-open our government by making sure it is funded?

Today, October 10, 2025, is important because today will be the first missed paycheck for Federal employees like law enforcement, the military, TSA, air-traffic controllers (who have been starting to call in 'sick' in greater numbers as the shutdown continues), and others. How many paychecks could you miss before you start going into debt? Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Miss a paycheck and it begins a debt spiral from which many will not recover. They will probably depend on credit cards which are now at a variable 20.03% interest. LendingTree says the average APR for all new card offers is a minimum of 20.63% to a maximum of 27.76% giving an average of 24.19%. NerdWallet shows that for every $500 charged at 24.19% over 30 days will cost an additional $10.04; $1,000 will cost an additional $20.07; and $2,000 will cost an additional $40.15 per month. Of course, that interest will compound each month as it becomes part of the principle owed the next month upon which interest will be charged.

Chase Bank explains how to calculate your monthly APR for yourself:

  1. Find your current APR and balance in your credit card statement.
  2. Divide your current APR by 12 to find your monthly periodic rate.
  3. Multiply that number with the amount of your current balance. For example, if you currently owe $500 on your credit card throughout the month and your current APR is 17.99%, you can calculate your monthly interest rate by dividing the 17.99% by 12, which is approximately 1.49%. Then multiply $500 x 0.0149 for an amount of $7.45 each month. Therefore, you should have been charged $7.45 in interest charges for that month based on your $500 balance.

So, not only is the shutdown delaying paychecks, it will actually cost workers MORE because they need to obtain the money to pay their bills somehow. And, even when they receive their paycheck once the government budget is approved, they are still being penalized because they will pay interest on the loans taken out to cover the paychecks that were withheld which will not be reimbursed.

Every Federal worker who voted for these Democrats needs to realize that the Democrats they voted for are now costing them even more per missed paycheck because now they will have to pay interest on the money they borrow to replace the paycheck they aren't getting for the work they have done. How long could you survive without having to take out high-interest loans if your paycheck stopped coming?

On October 9, 2025, the White House published the articleSchumer Taunts Americans as Democrat Shutdown Crushes Themresponding to Chuck Schumer's claim "every day gets better" as he discusses the outcome of the Democrat shutdown of the Federal government, holding Federal workers hostage as he pushes the agenda to fund free healthcare for illegal aliens. The article goes on to give examples of how this shutdown is causing military families who will go without a paycheck, air traffic controllers who are told they HAVE to work without a paycheck, small business owners who are having to lay off employees because the government had to issue "stop-work" orders for their contracts, small businesses who cater to Federal employees may not be able to remain in business as their customers won't be having an income, TSA agents are expected to continue to work without a paycheck, and tourists are saddened by the fact that iconic government attractions are closed.

On October 9, 2025, President Trump signed 2 Proclamations before he began his Cabinet Meeting:

1.Columbus Day 2025honoring Christopher Columbus who was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. On August 3, 1492, Christopher left Italy leading the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria to Asia. On October 12, 1492, Christopher's fleet landed in modern day Bahamas, planting a Christian Cross dedicating the land to GOD, at first thinking he landed in Asia and quickly discovering he had not landed in Asia. He continued his exploration traveling to Cuba and other Caribbean Islands. The proclamation goes on to express outrage at the attempted erasure of Christopher Columbus from our history and the vandalizing of historical artifacts acknowledging Christopher's contributions to our country. The proclamation goes on to announce:

In commemoration of Christopher Columbuss historic voyage, the Congress, by joint resolution of April 30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as Columbus Day.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 13, 2025, as Columbus Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of the great Christopher Columbus and all who have contributed to building our Nation.

2.Leif Erikson Day, 2025honoring the legendary Norse Viking explorer who is known as the first European to set foot in the New World. As a young man in Greenland, Leif decided to chart the waters leading to the distant lands he had heard about in childhood stories. He voyaged more than 1,800 miles landing in Canada, calling the the place he landed as "Vinland" which is modern day L'Anse aux Meadows at the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada. This trip paved the way for the first settlement in Jamestown, Virginia over 600 years later. The proclamation goes on to announce:

To honor Leif Erikson, son of Iceland and grandson of Norway, and to celebrate our Nordic-American heritage, the Congress, by joint resolution (Public Law 88-566) approved on September 2, 1964, has authorized the President of the United States to proclaim October 9 of each year as Leif Erikson Day.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2025, as Leif Erikson Day. I call upon all Americans to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Nordic Americans to our Nation with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.

On October 9, 2025, President Trump signed the Presidential MemorandumConstruction of Arctic Security Cuttersto address the national security issues caused by the lack of icebreakers and Arctic-capable vessels in the US Coast Guard's (USCG) fleet. In Section 2, the President orders the USCG (through the Secretary of Homeland Security and informed by the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort) to submit a plan to construct these vessels in the US by December 9, 2025. In addition, the Memorandum invokes 14 U.S.C. 1151(b) and 10 U.S.C. 8679(b) to permit foreign construction to meet the immediate national security needs of the US. Section 3 sunsets this memorandum on October 9, 2029 (unless the President decides to terminate it earlier).

The accompanying Fact SheetPresident Donald J. Trump Authorizes Construction of Arctic Security Cuttersexplains that we need to grow our Arctic fleet within the USCG to protect our national security. To do this quickly, we need to permit foreign construction of these vessels while we set up manufacturing of these vessels domestically. The Fact Sheet goes on to explain that our current USCG fleet has only 2 operational vessels.. They need at least 9 to serve national security year round in the Arctic. The Fact Sheet acknowledges that the off-shoring of vessel procurement is a temporary measure until such time as our on-shore efforts start producing vessels. The Fact Sheet acknowledges that the OBBB included nearly $9,000,000,000 in funding to build heavy, medium, and light Arctic vessels.

President Trump announced that he arranged to buy icebreakers from Finland for the USCG during his bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Finland.
