On December 31, 2025, President Trump signed the ProclamationAmendments to Adjusting Imports of Timber, Lumber, and their Derivative Products into the United Statesbased on the Secretary Commerce's report into wood products (timber, lumber, derivatives). Citing Proclamation 10976Adjusting Imports of Timber, Lumber, and their Derivative Products into the United States signed September 29, 2025 (discussed in my September 30, 2025 ANP Article) when he originally concurred with the Secretary of Commerce's first report due to US National Security interests resulting in additional tariffs. Based on the Trade Representative's report, President Trump believes this Proclamation will result in more productive negotiations of trade agreements; therefore, the additional tariffs levied by Proclamation 10976 are deferred until January 1, 2027.

The accompanying Fact SheetPresident Donald J. Trump Adjusts Imports of Timber, Lumber, and Their Derivative Products into the United Statesexplains that this proclamation supports US lumber industry by engaging in productive negotiations with trade partners with a focus on trade reciprocity. It addresses threats to National security as presented by the Secretary of Commerce identifying an over-reliance on foreign timber, lumber, and derivative products. It postpones the implementation of higher tariffs for 1 year while the Trade Representative works to negotiate reciprocal trade agreements. Finally, it acknowledges this proclamation builds upon President Trump's America First Trade Policy of using Section 232 tariffs to counter threats to our National security and bringing trade reciprocity to the forefront in dealings with foreign nations.

On January 3, 2026, the White House released thePresidential Message on the Anniversary of the Battle of Princetonaddressing the 10-day battle that followed Continental Troops' victory at the Battle of Trenton (discussed in my December 27, 2025 ANP Article). After the victory, General George Washington left sentries and campfires burning to trick the enemy into thinking the troops were still in Trenton. Instead, the vast majority of the Army was at the British garrison at Princeton. Brigadier General Hugh Mercer was fatally wounded at the beginning of the 10-day battle. President Trump writes:

That day, General Washingtons men won a crucial victory, revived our national spirit, and breathed new life into the cause of independence throughout the Colonies. Nearly two and a half centuries later, the patriots renewed spirit of determination remains an enduring symbol of American strength, resilience, and grit. Today, we pledge to continue the work of saving our country with the courage that burned in the hearts of the warriors at Princeton 249 years ago. We honor their valiant legacy. We vow to protect our inheritance of liberty against all enemies and to forge a future worthy of their sacrifice.

On January 1, 2026, the White House released thePresidential Message on the Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamationcelebrating President Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation 163 years (between 5 and 7 generations ago (based on an established genealogical rangeof 25 to 30 year generation spread, Wikipedia says a generation is about 20-30 years)) on January 1, 1863. The National Archives provides a transcript of this Proclamation:

Whereas, on the twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit:

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

"That the Executive will, on the first day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the States and parts of States, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States; and the fact that any State, or the people thereof, shall on that day be, in good faith, represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such State shall have participated, shall, in the absence of strong countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such State, and the people thereof, are not then in rebellion against the United States."

Now, therefore I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief, of the Army and Navy of the United States in time of actual armed rebellion against the authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion, do, on this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and in accordance with my purpose so to do publicly proclaimed for the full period of one hundred days, from the day first above mentioned, order and designate as the States and parts of States wherein the people thereof respectively, are this day in rebellion against the United States, the following, to wit:

Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, (except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans) Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia, and also the counties of Berkley, Accomac, Northampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Ann, and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth[)], and which excepted parts, are for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.

And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defence; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages.

And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service.

And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the eighty-seventh.

By the President: ABRAHAM LINCOLN

WILLIAM H. SEWARD, Secretary of State.

President Trump writes:

The Emancipation Proclamation set the stage for the ultimate abolition of slavery, culminating in the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment nearly 2 years later. It endures to this day as a monumental testament to the divine truth that equality is a sacred birthright granted not by government but by the hand of Almighty God. It signaled the dawn of a new day in our Nations journey toward liberty and the inalienable rights of every citizen. Its signing remains a morally defining moment in our national story and an enduring legacy of President Lincolns conviction that our countrywhich launched a revolution in the pursuit of freedom and human dignityis the last best hope of Earth.

Today, in President Lincolns honor, we recommit to the eternal truth that the United States of America is blessed by God; is bound together by justice; and was, is, and will forever be a great Nation.

On December 31, 2025, the White House released thePresidential Message on the Birthday of General George C. Marshall, Jrwith a focus on General Marshall's career. The message describes General Marshall as "an American titan whose bold leadership, strategic brilliance, and unceasing devotion to freedom." General Marshall was a disciplined tactician who grew our military from 200,000 to more than 8 million during WWII. After the war, General Marshall became a world-renowned diplomat authoring the "Marshall Plan" for the EU's postwar recovery, solidifying America's global leadership. In 1953, General Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his involvement of ending WWII. President Trump writes:

Today, my Administration is proudly carrying forth General Marshalls incredible legacy, including by restoring a foreign policy of peace through strength and rebuilding our Nations military. Already, we have secured a series of major peace agreements between countries marred by decades of conflict, and we have restored our military as the biggest, strongest, most feared, and most lethal fighting force in the world. As President, I will continue to put American lives, interests, and values firstand I will never stop working to achieve a future free from war.

On what would have been General Marshalls 145th birthday, we celebrate his heroism, bravery, and acumen. We proudly remember him as one of the greatest military and diplomatic minds the world has ever seen. Above all, we recommit to his vision of global peace and prosperity, and we pledge to continue to lead the world with a righteous moral clarity and an unwavering resolve.

Today's Patriot is George Catlett Marshall Jr who was born December 31, 1880 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the youngest of 3 children. He was Chief Justice John Marshall's first cousin 3 times removed.

George was educated at Miss Alcinda Thompson's private school followed by a year at Uniontown's Central School. Around age 10, he discovered seeds and flowers, becoming an amateur gardener for life. He had average grades (mostly due to a sour attitude and lack of preparation) precluding an appointment to the US Military Academy, so he decided to enroll in the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). His older brother, Stuart, a graduate of the VMI was concerned that George would "disgrace the family name" if he attended VMI. George enrolled at age 16 in September 1897. His mother sold land to pay his tuition and expenses. In his first year at the Institute, he was the subject of hazing. He was directed to squat over a bayonet pointed upwards. He fainted after 20 minutes and impaled himself on the bayonet causing a deep laceration. George did not "rat out" the hazers and the hazers left him alone afterwards.

George did well at the Institute. He ranked first in military discipline but about average academically (as he did in his early education). In 1901, George attained the rank of first captain (the highest rank a cadet could achieve) even though he is 15th out of 34 in his class. He received a diploma as only the top 5 or 6% received bachelor's degrees.

After his graduation from VMI, he became Commandant of Students at the Danville Military Institute in Danville, Virginia. He passed the comprehensive exam to become an officer in the Army. His father assisted him by obtaining recommendations from both of Pennsylvania's Senators to bolster is application.

In February 1902, George was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry in the 30th Infantry Regiment in the Philippines, resigning his position at Danville.

George married Elizabeth Carter "Lily" Coles on February 11, 1902 at her mother's home in Lexington, Virginia. Lily had previously turned down George's older brother's proposal and this created an estrangement between the 2 brothers. Lily died September 15, 1927 after having a goiter removed, the surgery strained her weak heart. The couple had no children.

George married Katherine Boyce Tupper (October 8, 1882 to December 18, 1978) on October 15, 1930. She had been married previously (her husband, Clifton Stevenson Brown, was murdered in 1928 by an angry client) and brought 3 children to the marriage (Katherine and George had no children of their own).

George retired from the Army on February 28, 1947 but returned to active duty on March 1, 1949. US officers holding 5-star rank never truly retire, and they draw their active duty pay for life even if not on active duty.

George finally retired from public life in September 1951 returning to his manor in Leesburg, Virginia purchased in 1941. There he gardened, growing vegetables while his wife, Katherine, tended her rose garden (the Katherine Tupper Marshall Rose, a pink hybrid tea rose, was created by Eugene S Boerner and named after Katherine (patented by Jackson & Perkins in 1943).

George held many positions in his life: Chief of Staff US Army, Secretary of State (January 21, 1947-January 20, 1949), President of American Red Cross, 3rd Secretary of Defense, as well as recognition of his attainment of 5-Star General (December 16, 1944) and General of the Army on April 11, 1946. Over his life of service, George received many military awards and decorations (both national and foreign), civilian honors (including a Congressional Gold Medal), Honorary degrees (PhD, SdD, DScMil, LLD, and DCL to name a few). In 1953, George was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Prize website cites George's activities after his military service most notably citing the "Marshall Plan" of economic aid to the EU after WWII as the reason for his nomination for the prize. George's acceptance lecture and acceptance speech are available for free on The Nobel Prize website.

George died from a series of strokes on October 16, 1959, 2 months shy of his 79th birthday. His body laid in state at Washington National Cathedral for 24 hours attended by representatives from each US armed service as well as a VMI cadet. Flags were flown at half-staff. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery (Section 7, grade 8198) next to Lily, his first wife (and her mother). When Katherine passed in 1978, she was also interred next to him at Arlington.
