The Trump-backed candidate win comes after a couple of MAGA-backed candidate losses in other Arizona elections in recent years, including Blake Masters losing his bid for Senate in 2022 and Kari Lake losing the GOP gubernatorial primary in 2020.
Further down the ballot, in the GOP primary for Arizona’s 5th House District, the Trump-backed candidate Mark Lamb took the win, according to CNN:
Former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb will win the Republican nomination for Arizona's 5th Congressional District, CNN's Decision Desk projects, positioning him as the heavy favorite to succeed outgoing Rep. Andy Biggs. https://t.co/Zysllwp3Uspic.twitter.com/P999tyeCpZ
This district was previously represented by Biggs, and featured a primary match-up between Lamb and Republican Daniel Keenan, who ran on, in part, growing up in the district and raising his family there.
Reports of Lamb using threats to silence allegations of sexting and other misconduct arose during the campaign, stemming from coverage by The Arizona Republic.
Another Trump-backed candidate, the former NFL kicker Jay Feely, won the battle for the GOP primary in Arizona’s 1st district for the House, CNN also reported.
Feely competed in the NFL for 14 seasons and played for the home state team Arizona Cardinals for a total of four seasons during his professional football career.
This was a competitive primary between GOP candidates to fill an open seat left behind by Republican David Schweikert, who walked away from the seat to pursue a now-cut short run for governor, AZ Mirror reported.
State Rep. Alexander Kolodin won the primary for secretary of state against his opponent Gina Swoboda. The latter was generally considered a more moderate, establishment candidate. She was the chairwoman of the Arizona Republican Party from 2024-2026.
Kolodin ran on the key issue of election integrity and has previously taken aim at the integrity of previous election results in the Grand Canyon State.
Kolodin officially challenged state election results in 2020 and 2022, filing lawsuits with legal help from Sidney Powell.
Now, the University of Pennsylvania-educated lawyer Kolodin is backed by the Republican Party to compete against Democratic incumbent Adrian Fontes.
