Presidents Trump And Xi Participate In A State Banquet, Feast Of The Ascension, America250 The Lewis And Clark Expedition, And More

By S.E. Gunn, PhDAll News Pipeline

On May 14, 2026, President Trump participated in a State Banquet with President Xi of the People's Republic of China (video below). President Xi made opening remarks:

Honorable Person Donald J Trump, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a great pleasure to host the state banquet with the Honor of President Trump during his state visit to China. On behalf of the Chinese Government and People, I would like to extend a warm welcome to President Trump and the US delegation.

This is a historic visit. This year marks the start of China's 15th 5-year plan for economic and social development. The over 1.4 billion people of China, drawing on the rich heritage of our over 5,000 year civilization, are advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts. To high quality development.

This year is also the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The over 300 million American people are reinvigorating the spirit of patriotism, innovation, and enterprise, and ushering in a new journey for the development of the United States. The People of China and the United States are both great people achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation and making America great again can go hand-in-hand. We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.

Fifty-five years ago, President Richard Nixon sent Dr Henry Kissinger to visit China. And ping-pong diplomacy was carried out between our two countries. Through efforts of the two governments and people, the door that had remained frozen for over 20 years was opened marking a milestone in temporary international relations. From then on, China and the United States have written many chapters of friendship through mutual openness and cooperation. Under the new situation, President Trump and I are fully aware of the expectations of our two nations, and the international community, have had multiple meetings and phone calls, and kept China-US relations generally stable.

Today, President Trump and I have had in-depth exchanges on China-US relations and international and regional dynamics. We both believe that that the China-US is the most important bi-lateral relationship in the world. We must make it work and never mess it up. Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals. President Trump and I also agree to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-US relations, and bring more peace, prosperity, and progress to the world.

Honorable President Donald J Trump, ladies and gentlemen, friends, looking back at the cause of China-US relations, whether or not we could have mutual respect, peaceful co-existence, and win-win cooperation is the key to whether the relationship can advance steadily. The world today is changing and turbulent. China-US relations concern the well-being of the over 1.7 billion people of both countries, and, in fact, the over 8 billion people of the world. Both sides should rise up to this historic responsibility, and steer the giant ship of China-US relations forward, steadily and in the right direction.

Now please join me in a toast to the development and prosperity of China and the United States and the well-being of our people, to the bright future of China-US relations, and the friendship between the two peoples, and to the health of President Trump and all the friends present. Cheers! Cheers!

President Trump then gave his toast:

Well, thank you very much, this is a great honor. It was a fantastic day. And, in particular, I want to than President Xi, my friend, for this magnificent welcome. And it was really a magnificent welcome like none other. And for so graciously hosting us on this very historic state visit. We had extremely positive and productive conversations and meetings today, with the Chinese delegation earlier, and this evening is another cherished opportunity to discuss, among friends, some of the things we discussed today. All good for the United States and for China. It was a great honor to be with you (as he gestures to where President Xi is seated). Please (gestures to the translator).

The relationship between the American and Chinese people goes all the way back to America's founding. The first American Consul to China, Samuel Shaw, arrived on the first American trading ship to reach these shores in 1784. The Chinese merchants had a name for these Americans, they called their visions the new people. Two and a half centuries later, that first connection has grown into one of the most consequential relationships in world history.

From the beginning, our citizens have shared deep feelings of mutual respect. Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, published the sayings of Confucius in his colonial newspaper. And today's culture recognizing that ancient Chinese sage is carved into the United States Supreme Court, very proudly.

The appreciation ran in both directions, Chinese admirers of President George Washington gifted a stone tablet honoring his memory to adorn the Washington Monument. It bears the words of a Chinese official who called the great General and Statesman a hero among men.

Across the centuries, this mutual esteem grew into a relationship that reflected the tremendous talent and potential of our two people. Chinese workers helped lay the railroad tracks that connected our Atlantic coast to the Pacific. American travelers to China helped spread literacy and modern medicine, and, at the request of China's Ambassador, it was President Theodore Roosevelt who provided the funds to establish President Xi's alma mater, Tsinghua University.

As allies in World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt mentions of the brave people of China, it's what they were, drew loud cheers in his speeches in the United States. Everybody loved what he had to say. Just as many Chinese now love basketball and blue jeans. Chinese restaurants in America today outnumber the five largest fast food chains in the United States all combined. That's a pretty big statement.

This bond of commerce and respect that stretches back 250 years is the foundation for a future that benefits both of our nations. The American and Chinese people share much in common. We value hard work, we value courage and achievement, we love our families, and we love our countries. Together we have a chance to draw on these values to create a future of greater prosperity, cooperation, and happiness, and peace for our children, we love our children. This region and the world, it's a special world with the two of us united and together.

Thank you, again, President Xi, for this beautiful welcome and tonight it is my honor to extend an invitation to you and Madam Peng [Liyuan], to visit us at the White House this September 24th and we look forward to it. And I'd now like to raise a glass and propose a toast to the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people. It's a very special relationship, and I want to thank you again, this has been an amazing period of time. Thank you, President Xi. Thank you everybody. Thank you everybody very much.

On May 14, 2026, the White House published the Presidential Message on the Feast of the Ascension stating that he and Melanie will join with Christians in the US and around the world who celebrate the memorial feast day of the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. President Trump reminds us that 40 days ago we celebrated the miracle of Easter, when Jesus rose from the dead. On this day we celebrate his bodily departure from Earth to return to His Father in Heaven. President Trump writes:

On this special day, we are reminded that, for millions of Americans, the love of Christ gives our lives—and our country—the deepest meaning, purpose, and identity.  As we celebrate 250 years of American freedom and independence, we remember that America remains a great Nation because the United States has always been a Nation blessed by God.

Congress has STILL not addressed the very simple SAVE America Act requiring that one be a Citizen of the United States of America and show their ID in order to vote in US elections. This is, at a minimum, an 80/20 issue with the 80 (or more) being YES to ID and Citizenship for voting. So exactly what are they being paid to do? Thwart the will of We The People? And let's add the fact that none of the democrats showed up to the covid whistleblower hearing. They keep taking so much time off and accomplishing virtually nothing. It seems every bill takes multiple votes. They don't drop a bill when it does not have the votes to pass, they keep discussing it and voting on it over and over. That nonsense needs to stop.

The SENATE convened at 10am and adjourned at 2:45pm. Next meeting is 3pm on May 18, 2026.

The Senate made one vote today, they combined all of President Trump's nominees into one motion. This decision was agreed to in a 51 to 46 vote with 3 members not voting.

This does not mean the nominees are "approved" at this point. It only means that the Senate has agreed to vote upon all of them at once "En Bloc" - the nominees are not yet approved. I suspect that will happen on Monday after the Senate takes another 3-day weekend.

The HOUSE convened at 10am and adjourned at 8:10pm. Next meeting is 9am on May 15, 2026.

The House discussed 5 bills:

  • HCR75 - Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • * HR5625 - Cashless Bail Reporting Act
  • * HR6260 - Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act of 2025
  • * HR8365 - Monitor Accountability Act
  • HR8469 - Making appropriations for military construction, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and related agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2027, and for other purposes.

The House made 6 votes:

  • Roll no. 173 - HR8365 - RECORDED VOTE - Passed 219 to 204 with 7 members not voting (isn't it amazing how when they have to attach their name to the vote, 9 of them changed their vote)
  • Roll no. 172 - HR8365 - YEA-AND-NAY - Failed 210 to 213 with 7 members not voting
  • Roll no. 171 - HR5625 - YEA-AND-NAY - Passed 308 to 116 with 6 members not voting
  • Roll no. 170 - HCR75 - YEA-AND-NAY - Failed 212 to 212 with 6 members not voting
  • Roll no. 169 - HR6260 - RECORDED VOTE - Passed 243 to 179 with 8 not voting (again, once they have to attach their name to the vote, it's amazing how many switched their vote - 33 of them this time)
  • Roll no. 168 - HR6260 - YEA-AND-NAY - Failed 210 to 213 with 7 members not voting

President Trump's Presidential Actions published in the Federal Register (FR) to date:

  • 258 Executive Orders
  • 145 Proclamations
  • 140 Presidential Orders, Memoranda, Determinations, Permits, and Notices

On May 14, 2026, the FR published the Proclamation 11029 Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, 2026 signed May 11, 2026 (discussed in my May 12, 2026 ANP Article).

On May 14, 1804, the newly formed Corps of Discovery (later called the Lewis and Clark Expedition) set forth on an expedition to explore and detail as much of the recently acquired terrain of the Louisiana Purchase. The Corps was led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark. Together with 20 US Army and civilian volunteers, Clark set forth from Camp Dubois (aka Camp Wood), Illinois meeting Lewis and another 10 US Army and civilian volunteers in St Charles, Missouri. The Corps traveled up the Missouri River, crossed the Continental Divide of the Americas near the Lemhi Pass. In November, they reached Knife River Village (aka North Dakota) where they met Sacagawea and her fur-trader husband Touissaint Charbonneau and their newborn baby. The couple joined the expedition as interpreters. Eventually, they arrived at the Columbia River and from there first sighted the Pacific Ocean in Oregon on November 7, 1805. It took another 2 weeks to actually arrive at the ocean.

The Corps then had to construct lodging, which they called Fort Clatsop in Oregon. They overwintered at Fort Clatsop where Lewis did most of his writing about the journey. On March 23, 1806, the Corps left Fort Clatsop headed back to their starting point arriving September 23, 1806. The Corps traveled approximately 10,600 miles, 85%, over 9,000 miles were by boat. The Corps spent 862 days exploring a passage through the new Louisiana Purchase.

This exploration of the Louisiana Purchase set about to 1) find a commerce route through navigable waterways across the continent that would avoid the hot and desolate southwest desert, 2) establish an American presence in the newly acquired lands before anyone else could do so (like the European powers), 3) document the biodiversity, topography, and geography of the newly acquired western lands, and 4) establish positive trade relations with Native American tribes living in the region.

The Corps carried Indian Peace Medals inscribed with a message of friendship and peace made out of silver. The Medals had a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson on them (reminding me of how President Trump is putting his name on things today). These Medals were to be distributed to the North American Indian tribes as the Corps traveled across the territory.

On May 14, 2026, the White House published the statement America 250: Presidential Message on the Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition celebrating the 222nd anniversary of the successful Expedition forever altering the destiny of our Nation. President Trump writes:

Their discoveries unlocked the American West and showed a young Nation that there was no frontier too vast, no wilderness too challenging, and no dream beyond reach.  Through their unmatched courage and perseverance, Lewis and Clark forged the pioneering spirit that drove millions of Americans westward, fulfilling our Manifest Destiny and carrying the promise of prosperity to the far corners of our continent.

As we commemorate the anniversary of Lewis and Clark’s Expedition and celebrate 250 years of American independence, we honor the generations of Americans who pushed the limits of possibility and expanded the boundaries of our Republic.  Together, we renew our enduring commitment to pursuing new frontiers of innovation and greatness, honoring the bold spirit of those who came before us, and ensuring that America remains strong, prosperous, and free for generations to come.
