Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins is telling Americans to find protein alternatives as beef prices soar.
Rollins, head of President Donald Trump’s U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), appeared on The Benny Show Monday, where host Benny Johnson asked her about the steep beef prices Americans are seeing at the grocery store and what the Trump administration is doing about it.
Johnson, referencing an earlier phone call Rollins received from Trump before going on air, said he believed he knew why the president called her.
“I know that Trump called you about the price of a Big Mac,” Johnson said, “as well as about the price of American beef.”
Johnson continued, saying he believed Trump was “very concerned” about the issue and appreciated the president’s “sensitivity,” before pressing Rollins on what the administration planned to do about the cost of beef.
“What are we going to do about American beef? Nobody likes it. Nobody likes these expensive steaks that cost $20 a pound. So, like gas prices and steak prices, no good,” Johnson said.
Rollins pushed back on Johnson’s characterization of her conversation with Trump, saying the call was not about beef prices.
“Well, it’s interesting. For the first time in, I think, six months, that’s not what he called me about,” Rollins said.
Rollins said Trump had called her about an issue involving another country and efforts to get “more fertilizer in,” while acknowledging that the two do discuss beef prices.
Returning to Johnson’s question, Rollins pointed to several factors affecting the price of beef. First, she said, “Beef is lower by 5 percent, so we are trending in the right direction.”
Rollins then argued that beef prices had risen nearly 30 percent under former President Joe Biden.
She also explained that rebuilding the nation’s cattle herd takes time because of the time required for reproduction, raising stock, and eventually bringing them to slaughter. Rollins pointed to additional obstacles, including the spread of New World screwworm along the southern border with Mexico, while noting that demand for beef has remained high.
Rollins then offered Americans an alternative if beef remains too expensive.
“But if it is too expensive, unlike fuel, Benny, you can eat chicken, pork, salmon, eggs; there are other sources of really good protein, and all of those prices are going down,” Rollins said.
“It isn’t necessarily breaking out there, and listen, I’m a mom of four; I’m still feeding a bunch of hungry kids,” she continued. “We realize the price of groceries are too high, we are doing everything we can to bring them down after the Biden years of crazy, crazy inflation and we are making progress.”
“And I’m really, really proud of that,” Rollins said. “Coming to you soon, cheaper beef, even better beef.”
“America does it better than anywhere in the world,” she continued. “And saving these American ranchers and incentivizing that, we are on their side and they should keep building their herds going forward.”
